As the owner of a Lhasa Apso I ought to be more than just an expert on grooming. However, there are plenty of dog lovers just like me who may have mastered the art of grooming although many of us leave it up to professional grooming services to tend to the finer aspects of grooming our pet pooches. Nevertheless, if you are a new dog lover you may want to learn more about the different breeds of dogs that really need grooming. While you may know exactly what a long haired lass goes through to maintain her flowing locks, there is pretty much a similarity, albeit of a different kind, when it comes to grooming dogs with long hair. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s remember that all dogs need grooming but some need a lot more as compared to others.

The hypoallergenics

Dog breeds that do not shed or shed their coat minimally are said to be hypoallergenic. These are ideal for people with allergies and include breeds like the Poodle, Bichon Frise, Australian Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, and a number of other Terrier breeds.

Heavy Shedding Dog Breeds

Dog breeds that shed their coats heavily usually have a thick, double coat. They do not require as much grooming. Among the breeds in the category are the Australian Shepherd, German Shepherd, Saint Bernard, Collie, and Pomeranian, to name a few.

The cute yet majestic poodle

Poodles definitely need no introduction when it comes to grooming. We’ve all seen them in dog shows, the movies and down the sidewalk. They make pretty pictures with prettier owners in tow. Poodles are known for their well proportioned and elegant bodies that stand out when they are well groomed. If you plan to show your poodle, extensive grooming is definitely something you would want to leave to an expert grooming service. They need frequent washing since their coats can get greasy while a trim should be on the agenda every two to three months.

Bichon Frise – the powder puff ball

The Bichon Frise is another breed with a soft dense inner coat and fine, silky outer coat with corkscrew curls. When groomed, its coat gives the appearance of a puff-ball. This small dog with a cheerful attitude needs regular grooming, which includes a bath once a month and daily brushing. It would be prudent to fix an appointment with a professional dog grooming service once in month unless you learn to become a master groomer.

Lhasa Apso – a true test for the master groomer

The Lhasa Apso is a small dog but is the contrary when it comes to personality. Known for their long, coarse and straight outer coast and soft thick undercoat, Lhasas also sport a long beard and whiskers that need constant grooming. They require regular brushing and combing or else end up with severely matted hair that may be difficult to groom. Their coats need trimming every couple of months.

The Afghan Hound, Maltese, Spaniels, and Setters are also some dog breeds that really need grooming. If you aren’t good at it you may want to consider taking your pet to a professional dog groomer. To see them well groomed is something priceless that any true dog lover will agree.
